Mark Egan

Mark McDaniel Egan ( born January 14, 1951 in Brockton, Massachusetts) is an American jazz bassist and composer.

Life and work

Egan played first trumpet in high school and moved at age 14 to electric bass, his main instrument. He studied at the University of Miami ( with Jerry Coker ) and privately with Jaco Pastorius, his musical role model. In 1976 he went with his own band ( with fellow students from Miami, including Hiram Bullock ) to New York City, where he among other things, the Pointer Sisters and David Sanborn accompanied. From 1977 to 1980 he was a member of the first Pat Metheny Group, Danny Gottlieb - Metheny he knew more of the common school. From 1982, he was co -leader of the successful group "Elements" with Danny Gottlieb, with whom he often played as a duo. Egan is heard as a studio musician on numerous albums as a sideman, as among others, Joe Beck, Bill Evans, Stan Getz ( Billy Highstreet Samba ), Alex de Grassi, Lew Soloff and Mike Stern, and even outside of jazz and rock context with singer / songwriters such as Marc Cohn and Sophie B. Hawkins. For thirteen years he also played in the Gil Evans Monday Night Orchestra; 1983, 1984 and 2000 he was a member of the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band. In 1985, "Mosaic", his first album as a leader, on Windham Hill Records. He teaches, has a private studio, founded in 1992, the label " Wavetone Records" and composed music for film and television.
