Mark Hummel

Mark Hummel (* December 15 1956 in New Haven, Connecticut) is an American harmonica player.

He grew up in Los Angeles and discovered in his youth, the passion for the blues. Bluesharper such as Little Walter, James Cotton, and Sonny Boy Williamson were his role models. At the age of 16, he moved to Berkeley, California, where he began playing with local blues musicians such as Cool Papa, Boogie Jake, Mississippi Johnny Waters and Sonny Lane together.

In 1980 he formed the band The Blues Survivors. After 1985, the first plate came on the market, he began with his band throughout the U.S., Canada and touring parts of Europe. He played with Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Eddie Taylor.

Interrupted by recordings, Mark Hummel since 1988 through on tour. He played in various blues festivals such as the San Francisco Blues Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and was also a jury member of the Hohner Harmonica World Championships in Germany.

Organized since 1991, produced and conceived his annual Blues Harmonica Blowouts. At this event series other musicians of the U.S. Bluesharps scene have participated such as Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, Kim Wilson, RJ Mischo, James Harman and Annie Raines.

In April 2008, he came along with his band "The Blues Survivors " - Rusty Tin ( g), Bob Welsh ( b, g, p) and Marty Dodson ( d) - the " first German Blues Harmonica Blowout Tour" to Germany. His German booking agency "Crossroad Blues Agency" could undertake for this blowout, the three Bluesharper Steve Baker, Keith Dunn and Doug Jay.

In November 2013 Hummel came again on a Europa-/Deutschland-Tournee under the motto " Golden State - Lone Star Revue" took place. The topic was the merger of the "West Coast / California Blues " ( Golden State ) with the " Texas Blues" ( Lone Star ). The -down with him on tour musicians represented these two U.S. states: Bumblebee ( harmonica / vocals), Little Charlie Baty (guitar) and RW Grigsby ( bass) were available for the West Coast Blues and Anson Funderburgh (guitar ) and Wes Starr (drums ) for the rhythm - oriented Texas blues.
