Mark Levine (musician)

Mark Levine ( born October 4, 1938 in Concord / New Hampshire) is an American jazz pianist and trombonist, who is known primarily as a representative of Latin Jazz.

Levine began his career as a jazz musician in Daytona Beach and studied until 1960 at Boston University. He was a student of Hall Overton, Herb Pomeroy and Jaki Byard.

He then worked among others with Houston Person (1966 ), Mongo Santamaria ( 1969-1970 ), Willie Bobo ( 1971-1974 ), David Liebman, Joe Henderson and Gábor Szabó. Henderson played two of his compositions, one on his album Canyon Lady.

Mid-1970s, Levine went to San Francisco, where he worked with Woody Shaw ( 1975-1976 ), the Blue Mitchell / Harold Land Quintet ( 1975-1979 ), Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson, Luis Gasca, Cal Tjader ( 1979-1983 ) and others worked. Then he led his own bands mainly.

In addition to his work as a musician Levine Jazz courses are all over Europe, Canada, China, Australia and New Zealand, taught in several jazz camps and since 2000 at the University of California at Berkeley. Since the mid- 1990s, he hosted the Jazz Masters Series Clinic, a mixture of workshop and master class, in which among others Cedar Walton, Mulgrew Miller, Kenny Barron, Elvin Jones, Eddie Palmieri and Tommy Flanagan participated.

In addition, Levine wrote several books on jazz. His album Isla was nominated in 2003 for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Recording.
