Mark McKoy

Mark McKoy ( born December 10, 1961 in Georgetown, Guyana ) is a former Canadian (later Austrian ) hurdler and sprinter who specialized discipline was the 110- meter hurdles.

A native of the Caribbean McKoy spent his childhood in England and came to Canada as a teenager. For the first time the international hurdler caused a stir at the Commonwealth Games in 1982, where he won gold. At the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki, he came to the finals and finished fourth. He took this ungrateful seat at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Bitter ended for him after another runners-up in the years between the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. After his disqualification for doping occurred Canadian Sprint mate Ben Johnson, the Canadian team was no longer in the 4 x 100 - meter relay. In the hurdles he was after he had stepped into a hurdle, only seventh. He got just as Johnson suspected of doping, which finally confirmed. This resulted in a two -year ban.

At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, he returned to competitive sports and was, as so often in fourth. It was not until the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, finally brought satisfaction after a ten year marked by ups and downs career: McKoy was Olympic champion.

During his two -year ban McKoy was relocated to Austria and started after his naturalization in 1994 a few more times for the Austrian Association. Mark McKoy also holds since 1986 the indoor world record for the rarely spilled distance of 50 meters hurdles.
