The Markarfljót is a river in southern Iceland.
The length of the river is about 100 km. The highest amount of water was measured at once in it was 2100 m³ / sec. during the stone Holt glacier run in 1967.
Headwaters
It rises in the mountain massif of Rauðufossafjöll, east of Hekla. It flows through narrow gorges in the mountainous region between Tindfjallajökull and Torfajökull until he steps out on the wide Sandurebene of the south near the Þórsmörk.
Outcome
The river is already of considerable size, as it flows from the Emstrur. His bed runs first north, then west of Þórsmörk, and he finally flows west of Eyjafjallajökull in the Atlantic.
