Marker (linguistics)

In modern linguistics is meant by a marker (of English. To mark " mark " ) a grammatical morpheme ( Grammem ). A marker can be either bound or free. It determines or modifies a lexical morpheme ( lexeme ) in terms of its function in the context of morphology and / or syntax.

By a marker that is a grammatical category is marked, that is highlighted. The term labeling refers to the use of markers.

However, it differs therefrom the concept of markedness.

In the older technical language instead of a marker was also spoken by a character.
