The Markkleeberg Lake is an artificial lake east of the eponymous town of Markham south of Leipzig.

He was born on 20 July 1999-June 2006 by the flooding of the northern part of the lignite mining aspen grove. Since 15 July 2006, the lake to the public as bathing and boat traffic to use is enabled. The area of ​​the lake is 252 ha, the memory space about 61 million cubic meters. The water table is at 113 m above sea level.

The Markkleeberg lake is part of the so-called Leipzig Neuseenlands, a mining landscape with several flooded opencast mining holes. With a depth of 57 or 58 meters, it is the deepest of these lakes. Further south, follow the Zwenkauer and Störmthaler lake. The connection of the Markkleeberger with the Störmthaler lake via a canal was completed on 18 May 2013. Here was a lock with 4 m stroke, because the lakes water level will have different heights. The channel has a bridge with a vertical clearance of 9.4 m, so that can go sailing boats.

Path network

After completion, you can walk around on a vast network of trails the lake at different heights - close to the water along the shore and above on the shore trail (length 9.7 km ) and its numerous side trails.
