Markos Kyprianou

Markos Kyprianou, Greek Μάρκος Κυπριανού [ markɔs kipria nu ː ] ( spoken Márkos Kiprianú, born January 22, 1960 in Limassol) is a Cypriot politician. From February 2008 to August 2011 he was foreign minister of his country. He was previously European Commissioner in Brussels. He is the son of Spyros Kyprianou, the Cypriot Minister of 1977 until 1988.

Training

He studied law at Athens University and graduated then at Trinity College, University of Cambridge and at Harvard University from, each with a master's degree.

Career in Cyprus

1986-1991 he was a city councilor in Nicosia since 1986 and member of the Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Cyprus, after 1990, he was also represented in the Political Committee of the Party, 1993-1997 President of the youth and from 1993 to 1998 and 2001 of the Executive Bureau of the party.

Since 1991, he sat in the Cypriot House of Representatives. On 1 March 2003 he was Minister of Finance. On 30 April 2004 he resigned from all these posts because he was European Commissioner. From March 3, 2008 to August 5, 2011, he was Foreign Minister of Cyprus.

Career in the EU

Since 1 May 2004, he was with Michaele Schreyer Budget Commissioner. From 18 November 2004, he was Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection.
