Markos Vamvakaris

Markos Vamvakaris (Greek Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης, born May 10, 1905 quarter Skali ( Σκαλί ) of Ano Syros, Syros, † February 8, 1972 in Nikaia ), was a Greek bouzouki and Rembetikointerpret.

He is considered the "guru " of the bouzouki, yet many contemporary Greek musicians see him as a role model. Vamvakaris initially worked as a butcher in Piraeus in order to feed himself and his family, since the bouzouki, stood at that time together with the rebetiko, the leading instrument, it was in dubious reputation. Both were associated with crime; all who played such an instrument or just owned, were considered disreputable.

Vamvakaris founded in 1934 with Giorgos Batis, Anestis Delias and Stratos Pagioumtzis, also known as Artemis, the rebetiko Quartet " Ksakousti Tetras tou Pirea ".

Vamvakaris ' son Stelios was married to Maria Tol, sister of the Dutch duo Tol & Tol Palingsound. Together with her daughters Gella and Corina Vamvakari they took over the vocals on their hit Eleni.
