Markus Ketterer

Markus Ketterer ( born August 23, 1967 in Helsinki ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who played in his playing days from 1985 to 1999 including for the Färjestad BK in the Swedish Elitserien.

Career

Markus Ketterer began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the junior department of Jokerit Helsinki. From the 1985/86 season he was the backup goalkeeper for the first team of Jokerit in the SM- liiga, but first came to no use. After the team suffered relegation to the second-class I divisioona, he played in the 1987/88 season for the first time regularly in professional hockey. With a catch rate of 90.7 percent, he was able to convince in the second division and was obliged by the SM- liiga participants TPS Turku. With this he won in his first three seasons as a goalkeeper in the top Finnish league in each case the Finnish championship. He could sit down, especially in the 1990/91 season in the limelight and won as the best goalkeeper in the league Urpo - Ylönen trophy. At the European level, he finished with his team in 1990 to second place in the European Cup.

For the 1991/92 season Ketterer returned to Jokerit Helsinki that had in the meantime reached the return to the SM- liiga. With Jokerit he became an instant masterpiece, which meant for the goalkeeper even the fourth league title for the fourth year in a row. Then also teams in North America were aware of him and he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1992 in the fifth round as the 107th overall player of the Buffalo Sabres. First, however, the national team stayed with Jokerit and took his team to third place in the 1993 European Cup. He then went to the United States was from 1993 to 1995, however, exclusively for Buffalo farm team, the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League between the posts, so he hired the Färjestad BK in the Swedish Elitserien. With the FBK he was Swedish Champion in the 1996/97 season. In the European Hockey League he parted with his team, however, from already in the group stage. From 1997 to 1999, the Olympian from 1992 played again for his hometown club Jokerit in the SM- liiga before he ended his career at the age of 31 years. He was made a total of 160 players in the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005.

Internationally

For Finland Ketterer participated exclusively at the Junior World Championship in 1987 at junior level. With this he led his team to win the gold medal and he was honored as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. In the senior level, he stood in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1996 and at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville. At the 1991 World Cup, he was awarded the best goalkeeper of the tournament at the World Cup a year later he was runner-up with Finland and he was elected to the All-Star Team of the World Cup. In addition, he represented the national team in 1991 at the Canada Cup in 1996 and the World Cup of Hockey, where he remained as a substitute goalkeeper without the use of the latter.
