Work

Oehlen is one of the main representatives of the new savages. The work is a commentary on the standardized value standards of bourgeois ideas. They revolted in the often dark-toned images against the wealth- induced apathy of the 1980s. In the tradition of Dada and Fluxus were working on the dismantling of the traditional concept of art.

Characteristic of his images is a superposition of different motifs in dense impasto style of painting, as well as bonds from pop culture. The various techniques lay the comparison with the sampling close in contemporary music. Besides painting, he also developed sculptures from polystyrene bodies.
