Marneuli

Marneuli (Georgian მარნეული ) is the administrative seat of the homonymous municipality in the region of Lower Kartli in southeastern Georgia. The city lies near the border with Azerbaijan and Armenia. It has 19,050 inhabitants ( as of 2008) and is mostly inhabited by members of Turkic peoples: Azeris and Karapapaken (also called Terekeme ) represent 83.1 % of the population.

The Georgian Air Force operates Marneuli near the military airfield Tbilisi Marneuli. In the Caucasus conflict in 2008, the airport was the target of Russian air attacks. On August 8, four people were killed and five injured thereby.
