Maronesa

Maronesa is an original breed of cattle from Portugal, the extinct aurochs, the wild form of the domestic bovine is very close in some respects. The name derives from one of the highest mountains in Portugal, the Serra do Marão, from.

The oldest evidence for this breed can be found from the year 1835. Lange was held Maronesa for a crossbreeding of Mirandesa and Barrosa, today it is considered a separate breed. Genetic studies have shown that Maronesa from other Iberian breeds, such as these two, different Maronesa were used mainly for field work in mountainous regions, especially in Alvão and Marão.

Appearance and Description

From Maronesa are several lines which are close to their wild ancestor more or less. The cops are colored much larger than the cows and dark brown -black and often have a bright dorsal stripe and a light edged muzzle. The stature of the bulls is muscular and has a curved back line due to the pronounced shoulder and neck musculature. Your skull is wearing contrasting forelocks, their color can vary from blond to dark brown. The horns are thick and curved forward. The cows are much more delicate than the bulls, and often stained much brighter - but there are also lines with rather dark brown cows. The horns of the cows are also swinging forward, sometimes turned outward.

Maronesas come from the Portuguese highlands and come up with the harsh climate there way around. Some herds live without human intervention and show their natural adapted to the seasons behaviors.

Primitive Maronesas are used by Tauros Project jointly with others except ox -like breeds like Pajuna, sayaguesa, maremmana primitivo, Limia cattle and others to breed a the aurochs by crossing and selection, breeding as far as possible corresponding beef.
