Pompadoursittich

The Pompadoursittich ( Prosopeia tabuensis ) is a rare parrot species of the genus mask parakeets ( Prosopeia ). He is not widespread and can be found in the mangrove forests in the Fiji Islands, the Tonga Islands, Nagu and Eua.

Features

The Pompadoursittich reached a size of 45 cm and has a wingspan of about 230-258 mm. The coloring of the plumage is the same for cock and hen, the only difference is that the upper beak in the female is smaller. The plumage on the face is brown - red to blackish, the head is cherry red, the plumage of the neck with the blue band is in its expansion very variable. The tail feathers are colored blue -green on the underside blackish and on the top. The eyes are surrounded by black rings around the eyes, which are bare and narrow. The iris of the birds is yellow to orange-red. The beak of parakeets is black and the feet gray.

The cries of the Pompadoursittiche is a harsh, high cry that is repeated one or more times.

Way of life

The Pompadoursittiche live outside the breeding season alone, in pairs or in small groups. Your flight is similar to the birds of prey and ravens, after beating their wings they glide for some distance. In their home they mainly feed on berries and fruits, and also fly on cultivated land to feed on fresh, milky corn on the cob or bananas.

Nutrition

The parakeets feed mainly on mangoes, papayas, bananas, various other fruits, berries and seeds.

Reproduction

The breeding season of Pompadoursittiche begins in February. In their nests, the females lay 3-4 eggs and incubate them then about 24 days. The chicks spend after hatching or 63 days in the nest. They are distinguished by their brown iris and its not completely black bill of the adult birds.
