Found grave chambers with vaulted ceilings suggest that the site of the present village was already inhabited in the Minoan era. Secure sources there are about the Byzantine period from the book " The Cretan War " by Marinos Tzane Bounialis. Maroulas first time was mentioned in 1577 by Francesco Barozzi under the name of Marula.

After the Asia Minor catastrophe here later found about 100 families from Ionia a new home.
