Marquess of Linlithgow

Marquess of Linlithgow, in the County of Linlithgow or West Lothian, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It is supported by the Family Hope.

The family seat is Hopetoun House west of Edinburgh.

Award

The title was created in 1902 for John Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun. This was a well-known colonial administrator and Conservative politician. Among other things, he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household and the first Governor-General of Australia.

Subordinate title

An ancestor of the first Marquess, Sir Charles Hope, supported the Act of Union 1707. He was therefore brought an action in 1703 for the Earl of Hopetoun, Viscount of Aithrie and Lord Hope. This title, which all belong to the peerage of Scotland, were able to go on any of the first Earl's daughters and their male descendants by a specific note in the ceremony.

1809 the third Earl of Hopetoun title of Baron, of Hopetoun was in the County of Linlithgow, loaned, which belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Thereby, the respective Earl had a firm seat in the House of Lords. This title could be transferred to male descendants of his father by a special note be because the Earl was childless.

The later fourth Earl was in the same year, nine years before he inherited the title from his half-brother, Baron Niddry, of Niddry Castle in the County of Linlithgow, collected. This dignity, which also belongs to the peerage of the United Kingdom is provided with a covering note.

All these titles are listed as subordinate title of Marquessats. The heir takes the courtesy title Earl of Hopetoun, whose eldest son of Viscount of those Aithrie.

Another title

The third Earl inherited in 1792 de jure of his great-uncle the title of Earl of Annandale and Hart Fell, although he never led them in person. This 1662 created title, which also belongs to the peerage of Scotland, can be inherited through the female line, and went after his death to his daughter. The proof of inheritance, however, was conducted in 1985.

The heir apparent is the eldest son of the present Marquess, Andrew Victor Arthur Charles Hope, Earl of Hopetoun (* 1969); whose heritage is turn his elder twin son, Charles Adrian Bristow Hope, Viscount Aithrie (* 2001).

Other titles of the family

Twice descendants of younger branches of the family have been raised to the peerage. These branches carry the title of Baron and Baron Glendevon Rankeillour. They are each entitled to inherit for the Marquessat and subordinate titles. Furthermore, a descendant has inherited the title of baronet, for it applies the above also.
