Marquess of Northampton

Marquess of Northampton is a hereditary British title of nobility, which was awarded twice. It is supported now by the family Compton.

Ancestral homes of the family are especially Castle Ashby in Northamptonshire and Wynyates Compton in Warwickshire.

Ceremonies

In 1547 the title was first awarded in the Peerage of England and indeed to William Parr, the brother of Catherine Parr. Catherine Parr was the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII after the death of his son Edward VI. , Whose advisor was William, came the Catholic Queen Mary in 1553 to power, the Protestant William Parr title but knew. After the accession of Elizabeth I in 1559 he got the title back. Since his first marriage had been annulled and his children were not entitled to inherit from this marriage, but his second marriage remained childless, the title became extinct after William Parr's death 1571st

The second ceremony took place in 1812 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Charles Compton, 9th Earl of Northampton. This had since 1784 a sitting first in the House of Commons, in 1796 then in the House of Lords held.

Subordinate title

Parr had been giving at the same time with the Marquessat the title Earl of Essex and Baron Parr, who also belonged to the peerage of England. Even this title extinguished with his death.

An ancestor of the first Marquess of second award was raised in 1618 to the Earl of Northampton. Also, this title belongs to the Peerage of England. He was also active as a politician.

The first Marquess Would the Baron Wilmington, of Wilmington in the County of Sussex, and Earl Compton, of Compton were simultaneously in the County of Warwick, awarded the Marquessat. Both belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

All titles are now run as the subordinate title of Marquess of Northampton each. The eldest son of the Marquess takes the courtesy title Earl Compton, whose eldest son, those of Baron Wilmington.

More titles

Another ancestor of the first Marquess of the second ceremony had been already appointed in 1547 as Baron Compton, of Compton in the County of Warwick, to the House of Lords. This Barony by writ belongs to the Peerage of England and can be inherited in the female line, if no children are present. This case occurred in 1754 as a fifth Earl died and no sons, but probably left a daughter, who inherited the barony. Dignity is now since 1855 in Abeyance.
