Marquis of Pombal Square

The Praça Marquês de Pombal [ pɾasɐ mɐɾkeʃ dɯ põbaɫ ] is a place in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, which is located between Avenida da Liberdade and Eduardo VII.

In the middle of the square is a statue inaugurated in 1934 of the first Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, after whom the square itself is named. The column is 36 meters high, the statue thereon has a height of nine meters. From the square, next to Avenida da Liberdade lead to downtown also the Avenida Duque de Loulé ( East), Avenida Fontes Perreira de Melo ( northeast), Avenida Joaquim António de Aguiar (northwest) and Rua Braacamp (west). In the square found, among other things, the crucial events to the promulgation of the First Portuguese Republic held on 5 October 1910.

The construction of the Avenida da Liberdade after the earthquake of 1755, there were now further expand the city to the north the opportunity. Order as to let it end Liberdade in a form appropriate to the Avenida, while allowing opportunities for branching out into different directions, decided the incumbent prime minister and city planners Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquês de Pombal, to create a new urban space. In 1882 there was a proposal by the population of the Marquês de Pombal honor in everyday life of Lisbon, so it was decided to erect a monument to him. Due to some financial and political problems of the Lisbon city government took the project until 1914 attack. The foundation was founded in 1917, however, the bronze statue was inaugurated 17 years later, on 13 May 1934 by President António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona. The time delay was due to the fact that the original artist Francisco dos Santos died, so that the two artist José Simões de Almeida and Leopoldo Neves de Almeida completed the work.

At the foot of the monument are allegories of the political reforms that had carried out the first Marquês of Pombal. The adjacent figures represent the University of Coimbra, where he had established a new faculty of Sciences, the broken stones shall constitute a reference to the 1755 earthquake. At the upper part of the base, among other important people are engraved from the time of the Marquês of Pombal, eg architect Eugénio dos Santos and the sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. On the cobbled square even the coat of arms of Lisbon can be seen.

Below the square is the same subway station of the Lisbon Metro, there take the yellow and the blue line.
