Marrabenta

The Marrabenta is a form of Mozambican dance music. The name derives from the Portuguese rebentar, or colloquially arrabentar, which means as much as break, burst, explode.

The origins of Marrabenta lie in Maputo the capital of Mozambique. The form of music has influences from the Mozambican and Portuguese folk music and from the western pop music. Played often with simple or improvised instruments. The lyrics are originally mostly in local slang, content ranges, the range of social Supercritical up to love songs. Early nameable representatives of this form of music were Fany Pfumo and Dilon Djindji, the latter began his career around 1939. Became popular the Marrabenta in the 1980s with bands like Eyuphuro and the Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique. More recently, particularly by the band Mabulu which also toured several times through Europe.
