Marshal of the German Democratic Republic

Marshal of the German Democratic Republic was a former Field Marshal approximately corresponding rank in the National People's Army of the GDR.

Decision of the State Council of the German Democratic Republic on 25 March 1982, the rank of Marshal of the German Democratic Republic has been introduced. The Journal of Law states: " (...) The highest military rank in the German Democratic Republic is Marshal of the German Democratic Republic. The appointment as Marshal of the German Democratic Republic takes place in a state of defense or to provide military services at the decision of the State Council of the German Democratic Republic by its chairman. This Decision shall enter into force on 1 May 1982. "

The rank of Marshal of the German Democratic Republic was never forgive. Theodor Hoffmann was promoted to his appointment as Minister of National Defence in November 1989 to the rank of admiral. He managed then the ranks of the Commodore and the Marshal of the DDR again.
