Marsilius of Inghen

Marsilius of Inghen (* 1335-1340 near Nijmegen, † August 20 1396 in Heidelberg) was from 1362 to 1378 Masters at the University of Paris, and from 1386 to 1396 at the University of Heidelberg. He wrote several commentaries on works of Aristotle on logic, natural philosophy and metaphysics, in which he represented a nominalist position.

More details on his family home and his youth are not known, the first detectable date of his biography is September 27, 1362 that day., He gave his inaugural lecture as magister artium at the University of Paris. There he began work in 1367 and 1371 and was also Rector of the University. Besides, he also studied theology. His lectures enjoyed great popularity. 1378 was the Marsilius of Delegates of the University of Paris at the court of Pope Urban VI. in Tivoli. 1379 he asked his colleague Hugh of Hervort, to represent its interests in Paris.

After 1379 the name of Marsilius was no longer mentioned by Inghen in the records of the University of Paris. Presumably, he was expelled by the schism of 1378.

From 1386 Marsilius was Magister at the University of Heidelberg, which he had in that year I co-founded under the Elector Ruprecht and where he served as rector of a total of nine times: from 1386, the year the University until 1392 and again from 23 June until his death on 20 August 1396th year. From 1389 to 1390 he was responsible for transferring the university register to Rome. Then he resumed the study of theology. He was the first theologian, he was awarded a doctorate in Heidelberg.

Soon afterwards died Marsilius of Inghen there and was buried in the Heidelberg Peter Church. His grave is no longer preserved, but in 2011, the 625th anniversary of the university, a commemorative plate in the southern side chapel, the university chapel built. The Rector's Book of Heidelberg University rector Johann van de Noet has maintained the death of his predecessor in the following words:

" In 1396, on August 20, the day of Saint Bernard (of Clairvaux ), died the venerable man, Master Marsilius of Inghen, canons and Thesaurar of the St. Andrew's congregation in Cologne, the founder and peaker of our university, an eminent doctor of Sacred theology, which has been a PhD here first. He has our university bequeathed numerous manuscripts theological and philosophical issues along with other valuables. He was rector and is buried in St. Peter's church in the choir in front of the main altar. His soul rest in peace. "

In 2007, the University of Heidelberg Center for Advanced Studies and named it in honor of Marsilius of Inghen Marsilius Kolleg.
