Mart Helme

Mart Helme (born 31 October 1949 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian historian, diplomat and politician.

Life and Politics

Mart Helme in 1968 completed the school in Pärnu. He then studied history at the State University of Tartu. He completed his university studies in 1973. Until 1992 helmets CEO of Estonian publishers association, was ( Eesti kirjastajate liit ).

In 1994, helmets into the diplomatic service of the newly independent Republic of Estonia again. The Estonian President Lennart Meri named 1995 outspoken critic of the Kremlin to the Estonian Ambassador in Moscow. After his return to Estonia helmets from 1999 served as deputy assistant secretary in the Estonian Foreign Ministry.

2003/2004 was helmets worked as a consultant in the Estonian Ministry of Agriculture. From 2005 to 2009 he was an advisor to the Estonian Europaabgebordneten Tunne Kelam of the conservative- nationalist Homeland Union ( Isamaaliit ). Since 2009, directs helmets Estonian publishing art.

In 2004 he stood as a candidate in the European elections in Estonia unsuccessful candidate of the rural- conservative Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ). In September 2004, helmets were excluded after a dispute with the then Interior Minister Margus Leivo from the party. Leivo had ordered the removal of a newly erected monument in Lihula for fighting on the side of the German Reich Estonians.

Private life

Mart Helme was married to the Estonian art historian Sirje helmets ( * 1949 ). The couple has three children, including the Estonian politicians and opponents of the EU Helmets Martin ( b. 1976 ).

Mart Helme is currently married to Helle - Monika helmets. With her he has two children together. Mart Helme is the brother of the Estonian military historian clean helmets ( 1954-2003 ).

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia entered helmets on as a singer and bass guitarist in the successful bands Fix, Hello, Vitamiin and Hübriid.
