Mart Port

Mart port ( born January 4, 1922 in Pärnu, Estonia, † February 3, 2012 in Tallinn ) was a Soviet- Estonian architect.

Life

Mart Port was born in 1922 as the son of Estonian Jaan Port botanist ( 1891-1950 ) and his wife Marta. During the Second World War, he fought in the Red Army. After the war he studied architecture at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute.

By 1990, Mart Port was the Soviet Union's state architect's office Eesti project employs, from 1961 to 1989 as its chief architect. In addition, he was from 1961 to 1992 lecturer at the Tallinn Art Academy, from 1977 with the title of professor. From 1955 to 1979 port was chairman of the Union of Architects of the Estonian SSR (Estonian Eesti NSV Arhitektide Liit ). In 1972 he was awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR, and in 1978 the title of People's Architect of the USSR.

Architectural work

Mart port was primarily responsible for urban general planning of Tallinn, Tartu and Viljandi and chief planner for the new parts of the city Tallinn Mustamae, Tallinn - Väike- Õismäe, Tallinn Lasnamäe, Tartu and Viljandi - Annelinn Männimäe. In addition, he planned various types of buildings of Soviet construction ( homes, schools, cultural centers and department stores, child care facilities ).

Known individual projects ports are the headquarters of the Estonian Communist Party (together with Raine Karp and Olga Konchayeva, 1964-1968 ), the Hotel Viru Tallinn (together with Henno Sepmann, 1972) as well as numerous residential and industrial complexes ( Eesti Kaabel, 1961). From Mart port the monumental monument to the Red Army in Tallinn Maarjamäe ( Maarjamäe obelisk, 1960) originates on the shores of the Baltic Sea.
