MÃ¥rten Eskil Winge

Mårten Eskil Winge ( born September 21, 1825 Stockholm, † April 22, 1896 in Enköping ) was a Swedish painter, illustrator and professor.

Biography

Winges father was the rector and vicar Isak Martin Winge. Winge acquired in 1846 graduated from high school in Uppsala and after that a student was under the decorative painter PE Wallander in Stockholm. In 1847 he enrolled at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan. In addition to his studies, he earned his living as a postal worker and by selling portraits. Even by his parents' house Winges became intrested for word about Scandinavian history. His drawings on this subject found in his environment a lot of attention. He designed, among other illustrations to Adam Oehlenschläger plant north Guder and Crown Prince Charles seal Fosterbröderna. Together with his student friend August Malmström be Winge turned to a Swedish version of the symbolism.

1856 Winge student at Johan Christoffer Boklund in the new school of painting of the Academy of Arts. The following year he received a royal medal for his work Charles X Gustav at the deathbed of Axel Oxenstierna. Winge received a scholarship that enabled him to study trip on Dusseldorf to Paris where he copied at the Louvre painting by Peter Paul Rubens. On the way back he reached Rome in 1859 before returning in 1863 to Sweden.

Winge in 1864 was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts and after various teaching he received a short time later the title of professor. In 1865 he opened his own school of painting in his studio. A second trip to Italy, which gave him a variety of inspirations, undertook Winge 1877.
