Martha Griffiths

Martha Wright Griffiths ( born January 29, 1912 as Martha Edna Wright in Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri, † 22 April 2003 in Amarda, Michigan) was an American politician and 1983-1991 Vizegouverneurim of the State of Michigan.

She studied at the University of Missouri and received her BA degree in 1934. Thereafter, she attended the Law School of the University of Michigan, completed her studies in 1940 and, after she was admitted to the legal profession in 1941, worked as a lawyer. From 1948 to 1952 she was a member of the House of Representatives from Michigan.

After Griffiths had in 1952 unsuccessfully running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, she was still elected two years later and represented there as a Democrat to the state of Michigan after repeated re-election of 3 January 1955 to 31 December 1974. In 1982, Griffiths was Vice Governor of Michigan elected; this office she successfully defended in the next elections in 1986. Griffiths remained thus until 1991 Deputy Governor.
