Martha P. Haynes

Martha Patricia Haynes is an American astronomer.

Haynes studied at Wellesley College (BA 1973) and Indiana University ( MA 1975, PhD 1978). She worked until 1981 at the Arecibo Observatory ( National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center ) and then became deputy director of the Green Bank Observatory. In 1983 she went to Cornell University, where she is a professor.

Her research focuses on the spatial distribution and evolution of galaxies, especially spiral galaxies. They often utilizes observations in the 21cm line of atomic hydrogen, which are obtained at the Arecibo Observatory.
