Martha (Passenger Pigeon)

Martha († September 1, 1914 at the zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio) was the last living passenger pigeon; it received its name in honor of the first U.S. First Lady Martha Washington.

1857 was an attempt to make the pigeons Ohio under protection. However, the State Senate was of the opinion that pigeons were not threatened with extinction. So the passenger pigeon was further adjusted, lived until 1914 with " Martha " only one specimen of this species.

After her death in the Cincinnati Zoo at the age of 29 years, Martha was frozen and sent to the Smithsonian, where it was prepared and issued. Meanwhile, Martha is no longer on public display.
