Marti Epstein

Marti Epstein ( born November 25, 1959 in Denver / Colorado) is an American composer and music educator.

Epstein began her musical studies in 1977 at the University of Nebraska at Robert Beadell. She continued her studies at the University of Colorado ( to 1982 ) and at Boston University, where Charles Eakin, Joyce Mekeel and Bernard Rands were among her teachers and her master's degree in 1984 and 1989 doctoral degrees in composition obtained. In two stays at Tangelwood Music Center (1986 and 1988), she studied composition with Oliver Knussen and Hans Werner Henze. From 1989 to 1991 she taught keyboard at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since 1991 she teaches composition at the Berklee College of Music, since 2006 as a professor.

At the invitation Henze she came to Munich in 1992 and composed here for the Biennale for New Music Theater, the Puppet Opera Hero and Leander. Other commissions they received, inter alia, by guitarist David Tanenbaum, the tuba player Samuel Pilafian, flutist Marianne Gedigian, the pianist Kathleen Supove, the New England Brass Quintet, the Boston Conservatory, Boston University Marsh Chapel Choir and the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston. As 1998, the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of Alisdair Neale the premiere of her orchestral piece Celestial Navigation.
