Martigna

Martigna is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Martigna is located on 659 m above sea level. M., about 15 km north- northeast of the city Oyonnax (air line). The farming village extends in the Jura, on a gently sloping hillside to the east between the valleys of Ain in the west and Bienne in the east, near the dam of the Vouglan.

The area of ​​8.75 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The area is drained by the village brook east to Ruisseau d' Héria, a right tributary of Bienne. In a valley south of the village, the small Lac de Chanon lies with his island. To the north extends the communal land of the hilly countryside to the Bois Montandriet. On the wooded ridge north of the village is 778 meters above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Martigna. In the south of the municipality spell ranges in the Bois de Charveron on the edge of the amount of Montcusel. The area of Martigna is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut- Jura.

History

Scattered findings indicate that the municipality of Martigna was already inhabited during the Roman period. First mentioned is the place in the 12th century. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Martinius and means something like estate of Martinius ( Martiniacum ). In the Middle Ages Martigna belonged to the dominion of the Barony of Moirans. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To a field change occurred in 1822, when the previously independent Chanon was incorporated into Martigna.

Attractions

Built in the 15th century chapel of Martigna was later elevated to the parish church; it has a bell tower from the 19th century. Next to the church remains of a Gothic manor house have been preserved. The castle was built in 1713.

Population

With 205 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Martigna one of the small towns in the Jura. After the population had steadily decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1906 260 people were still counted ), a slight increase in population was recorded since the early 1990s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Martigna was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by the agriculture and forestry through the village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Moirans -en- Montagne via Montcusel after Chancia.
