Martin County (Indiana)
Martin County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Shoals.
Geography
The County is located in the central south-west of Indiana and has an area of 882 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Greene County, Lawrence County, Orange County, Dubois County and Daviess County.
History
Martin County was formed on January 17, 1820 from parts of Daviess County and the Dubois County. It was named after John T. Martin, a major from Kentucky.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Martin County 10,369 people in 4,183 households and 2,877 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.93 percent White, 0.15 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.11 percent from other races groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.41 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,183 households out of which 31.6 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers and 31.2 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent of all households and 12.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
25.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.4 percent between 18 to 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years. 25.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 100.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,411, and the median income for a family $ 43,550. Males have a median income of $ 31,200, women $ 21,732. The per capita income was $ 17,054. 8.1 percent of families and 11.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
