Martin County (Kentucky)

Martin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Inez, which was named after the daughter of a postmaster in a neighboring town. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern Kentucky, adjacent to West Virginia and has an area of 598 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lawrence County, Pike County, Floyd County and Johnson County.

History

Martin County was formed on March 10, 1870 from parts of Floyd County, Johnson County, Lawrence County and Pike County. It was named after John P. Martin, a member of the U.S. Congress.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,578 people in Martin County. Of these, 84 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,776 households and 3,620 families.
