Martin County (Kentucky)
Martin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Inez, which was named after the daughter of a postmaster in a neighboring town. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in Eastern Kentucky, adjacent to West Virginia and has an area of 598 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lawrence County, Pike County, Floyd County and Johnson County.
History
Martin County was formed on March 10, 1870 from parts of Floyd County, Johnson County, Lawrence County and Pike County. It was named after John P. Martin, a member of the U.S. Congress.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,578 people in Martin County. Of these, 84 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,776 households and 3,620 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 99.25 percent White, 0.03 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.01 percent from other races groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,776 households out of which 39.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers, 24.2 percent were non-families, 21.8 percent of all households and 8.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.05.
Based on the county the population was spread from 28.1 percent population under 18 years, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 9.7 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 92.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 18,279, and the median income for a family was $ 21,574. Males have a median income of $ 31,994, women $ 18,011. The per capita income was $ 10,650. 33.3 percent of families and 37.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 45.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 26.9 percent of those 65 years.
