Martin County (North Carolina)

Martin County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Williamston, which was named after William Williams, a Colonel in the Revolutionary War.

Geography

The County is located in east-central North Carolina, is located in the north about 80 miles from Virginia and has an area of 1195 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bertie County, Washington County, Beaufort County, Pitt County, Edgecombe County and Halifax County.

Martin County is divided into 10 townships: Bear Grass, Cross Roads, Goose Nest, Griffins, Hamilton, Jamesville, Poplar Point, Robersonville, Williamston and Williams.

History

Martin County was formed in 1774 from parts of Halifax County and Tyrrell County. It was named after Josiah Martin, the last British royal governor of North Carolina.
