Martin Cruz Smith ( born 1942 in Reading, Pennsylvania; actually William Martin Smith) is an American writer.

Life

Martin Cruz Smith was born in 1942 in Reading, Pennsylvania, the son of a jazz musician and an Indian woman.

He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and worked before he started writing, from 1965 to 1969 as a journalist. In the 1970s he published his novels under pseudonyms such as Nick Carter, Martin Quinn, Simon Quinn and Martin Smith.
