Martin Drew

Martin Drew ( born February 11, 1944 in Northampton, † July 29, 2010 in London ) was an English jazz drummer. He was one of the most famous British jazz drummer.

Life and work

Drew played at the age of six years, the drums, taking thirteen years old his first professional gigs. He studied under George Fierstone and worked from 1975 to 1995 as the drummer for Ronnie Scott, where he accompanied musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker and Dexter Gordon. From 1974 to 2004 he was part of the combo of Oscar Peterson, with whom he performed in Canada, the U.S. and South America, Japan, Australia and Europe and recorded, among other things, with the Count Basie Orchestra.

In addition, Drew led his own bands different: the quintet Our band with Dick Morrissey, Jim Mullen, John Critchinson and Ron Mathewson, a quartet with Mornington Lockett, Gareth Williams and Laurence Cottle and the quintet founded in 2000, Celebrating the Jazz Couriers ( with Mornington Lockett, Nigel Hitchcock, Steve Melling and Andrew Cleyndert ).
