Martin Jay

Martin Jay ( born May 4, 1944 in New York City ) is an American historian. He is Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. In German-speaking Martin Jay is known by the work of dialectical imagination about the history of the Frankfurt School.

Jay received his Bachelor in 1965 at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and in 1971 his Ph.D. at Harvard University. The dissertation was incorporated into the later work Dialectical imagination. This work had a great impact on American views on the Frankfurt School.

In 2003, Jay was awarded the Science Award of Aby Warburg Foundation. In the years 2010/2011 he received the " Berlin Prize Fellowship " of the American Academy in Berlin.

Martin Jay is the husband of the literary critic Catherine Gallagher and has a daughter and a stepdaughter.
