Martin Jol

Jol (2009)

Maarten "Martin" Jol Cornelis [ jɔl ] (born 16 January 1956 in The Hague, Netherlands) is a Dutch football coach and former football player.

Career

Player

From 1973 to 1978 Jol was part of the squad of the Dutch first division club FC Den Haag and won with it already the end of his second season the KNVB Cup. He then moved to Germany for Bundesliga club Bayern Munich for which he played only ten games. Even before the first match day, 12 August, in the 0-1 defeat in the away match against Borussia Dortmund, he played a week ago in the first round of the DFB Cup in a 5-0 home win over the SSV Glött. After just one season he returned to the Netherlands in two seasons for the first division club FC Twente was active before moving to England moved to first division side West Bromwich Albion in 1982. With this club - where he was to replace Bryan Robson - he reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the League Cup, the greatest success in three years. For one season he moved to league rivals Coventry City and then returned to his homeland. With the second division side FC Den Haag he went in 1985 as a champion - and best Eerste Divisie -, ie second division players - in the Eredivisie, stayed for two years and got first class in 1988 again. After a year in the second division Jol ended his footballer career. For the national team of his country he played 1980-1981 three times.

Coach

Dutch clubs

Jol moved in 1991 to the coach compartment, took over doing the amateur team his home club, the further ADO was in contrast to the first team, and remained there until 1995 before moving to a year beforehand amateur club SVV Scheveningen at Roda JC Kerkrade an office in the highest Dutch league took over. His greatest success was there winning the Dutch Cup in 1997, which was equivalent to the first title of the club after 30 years. Between 1998 and 2004 Jol was then coach of RKC Waalwijk. This club he led during his tenure of the descent regions in the upper half of the table and fought with the team on a regular basis to qualify for a European club competition. For his excellent performance, he was later elected by the Dutch journalist in 2001 as well as the fellow coaches and league players another year each to the best coaches in the Netherlands.

Tottenham Hotspur

In 2004 he was appointed by Frank Arnesen - taken as an assistant coach Jacques Santini under contract, with Sir Alex Ferguson thought previously an obligation Jols in the wizard function, had but then decided for Carlos Queiroz - sports director of Tottenham Hotspur. After only 17 games Santini left the Spurs already and Jol took over as coach on an interim basis initially and later as a permanent head coach. Although his term began as a trainer there with a defeat, he was able to steadily improve the performance of the team and led the club to ninth place, which had previously never been surpassed in nine seasons. The qualification for a European competition with Tottenham Jol missed it by only three points. In December 2004, Jol was awarded the title of best coach in the past month in the FA and it was followed in the spring of 2005, speculation about his possible move to Ajax Amsterdam after the coaching position became vacant there.

The positive development was Tottenham's Jol in the following season 2005/ 06 to continue and closed the season with his team on the fifth place from after the club had never been ranked during the entire time outside the top six teams.

After a poor start to the season with only one win in ten league games and table number 18 Jol resigned at Tottenham on 25 October 2007.

Hamburger SV

From the 2008/ 09 season, Jol became the new head coach of Hamburger SV. His contract was dated to 2010. However, he remained only one year. Under Jol HSV succeeded in moving into the UEFA Cup semi-finals and in the DFB Cup semi-finals, where they failed each at Werder Bremen. Although the team for a week led the table in the Bundesliga after 21 matches and 26 Matchday even on points located with the league leaders and eventual champions VfL Wolfsburg in second place, had succeeded at the end of the season in fifth place just short of qualification to participate the newly-created UEFA Europa League.

Ajax Amsterdam

May 26, 2009 Ajax Jol committed for the new season, after he had terminated his contract at Hamburg on the same day. He was the successor of Marco van Basten. With Ajax, he reached second place in the Eredivisie behind FC Twente Enschede. In the battle for the KNVB Cup Jol's team reached the finals and could join in May 2010, in the home game 2-0 and 4-1 in De Kuip prevail against Feyenoord Rotterdam. The high expectations to recapture the first place among the Dutch club in the season 2010/ 11 were not met. The encounter at the Johan Cruyff Schaal Ajax lost at the start of the new season 0-1 against the champions from Enschede. After the first round Ajax stood in the table five points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente same point fourth. Jol stepped on it on 6 December 2010 by his position as head coach back. For him, temporarily took over the former Ajax player Frank de Boer, at that time coach of the Ajax -A- Youth and assistant coach of the national team, the sports management.

Fulham

In the summer of 2011, the Fulham Jol committed as new head coach. He signed a two-year contract until 30 June 2013 with an option for another year. The club parted company with Jol on December 1, 2013 after only 13 games his third season since the 0-3 defeat in the away game against West Ham United was the fifth in a row.
