Martin Knoller

Martin Knoller ( born November 18, 1725 in Steinach am Brenner, † July 24, 1804 in Milan ) is considered one of the best fresco painters of his time in Southern Germany and the Austrian region.

Life

Martin Knoller comes from Steinach am Brenner. His most important teacher was Paul Troger, with whom he went to Salzburg and Vienna. Knoller occurs mainly as a fresco painter and panel painter. He created his first fresco 1754 in the parish church Anras in East Tyrol, still under the influence of Paul Troger.

1755 he went to Rome, where he was strongly influenced by classicism. His teachers there were Rafael Mengs and Johann Winckelmann. Knoller is in his works the poles of Baroque, Rococo and Classicism with its panel paintings were much more classicism approach than his frescoes.

His great patron was Karl Joseph Graf Firmian, who resided as minister of Lombardy in Milan. Knoller created numerous works for him. 1760-65 he spent in Rome. During the summer months, he painted again and again frescoes in Tyrol and Bavaria.

Knoller married a Milanese merchant's daughter. In Milan he became a professor at the Academy. There, he died 1804.

At Martin Knoller, there are often groups of figures, in which, however, always clearly recorded by a single figure in the foreground. Typical is a clear, fresh colorfulness, which can be seen especially in the often dazzling apparel. Baroque painting is like from numerous moving figure groupings, where goes the single figure, but there is the individual from at Knoller. In his art he has been out on the cooler classicism. The colors are less strong, the characters like überlängt something the composition clear and concise. It lacks the baroque pathos. In his architecture he is a master of perspective. He loves the figures in unusual views and attitudes. Beauty means to him clarity in color and figurative.

In 1953 ( 22nd District ) was named after him in the Knollergasse Vienna Danube city.
