Martin Lipp

Martin Lipp (born 2 Apriljul / April 14 1854greg in Vooru, Livonia, .. Rural community today Tarvastu, Estonia, † March 8, 1923 in Tallinn) was an Estonian poet and pastor.

Life and work

Martin Lipp attended the village school of Vooru ( German Woroküll ), the parish school of Tarvastu ( Tarwast ), the county school of Valga ( Walk ) and until 1874 the Gymnasium in Tartu ( Dorpat ). 1878 closed Lipp his studies in theology at the University of Tartu. There he was in the " club students Estonians " (Estonian Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts ) active.

Lipp was among other things a pastor of the Lutheran congregation of Kaarma ( Carmel ) on the island of Saaremaa ( Osel ) ( 1882-1884 ) and director of its teacher training seminar. From 1884 Lipp was pastor in the South-Estonian Nõo ( Nüggen ).

Martin Lipp has remained primarily as the creator of the late Romantic poetry in memory. He has published books of poetry Kodu Kannid ( two volumes, 1897 and 1899 ), Lihtsad lilled (1902 ) and Päikese kullas (1909). As unfinished manuscript of the band Hilised õied is obtained. Lipps texts often have Estonian- patriotic content. His poem Eesti Lipp ( " The Estonian flag " ( voiced by Enn Võrk ) was during the Soviet occupation of Estonia become an unofficial national anthem and conspiratorial. Lipp also published under the pseudonym Martin Lillenupp.

In addition, Lipp translated secular and sacred literature from German and Finnish, and was one of the most important Estonian genealogists of his time. He now lies buried in the cemetery of Nõo.

Private life

1880 married Henriette Lipp Lydia Lau (* 1862). The following year, the daughter Helmi Magdalene was born.
