Martin P. Nilsson

Martin Persson Nilsson ( born July 12, 1874 in Stoby, Kristianstad Lan, Sweden, † April 7, 1967 in Lund ) was a Swedish classical scholar and historian of religion.

Life

Nilsson was from 1900 professor at the University of Lund. In 1905 he became secretary of the " Swedish Archaeological Commission " on Rhodes. In 1909 he became a full Professor of Ancient Greek language, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Lund. His researches were almost all fields of classical antiquity, particularly of Greek religion. Also in anthropology he has done important, as in folklore, especially the Swedish.

Nilsson was also from 1918 secretary of Kungliga Humanistiska Vetenskapssamfundet i Lund ( Royal Society of Letters in Lund ) and from 1920 a member of the Kungliga och Vitterhets History Antikvitets Academies in Stockholm. As of February 7, 1924 Nilsson was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, 1929 Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1967 and nonresident member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.

His most famous work is the history of Greek religion in the Handbook of Classical Studies, which went through several editions. For the textbook of the history of religion Chantepie de la Saussaye he delivered the contribution of the Greeks.
