Martin Rinkart

Rinckart Martin ( born April 24, 1586 Eilenburg, † December 8, 1649 ) was a German poet, Protestant theologian and church musicians of the Baroque period.

Life

Rinckart, son of a cooper, 1601 Thomas student in Leipzig, in 1604 a member of the St. Thomas Boys', was at the same time (since 1602) he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. In 1610 he was cantor at St. Nikolai in Eisleben and teachers at the local grammar school, 1611 ibid deacon at St. Anne's Church, End 1613 pastor at the nearby Erdeborn. 1615 crowned the " poet laureate ", he earned his master's degree the following year. 1617 he was appointed Archdeacon in his native city rush Castle; here he worked during the Thirty Years' War under great hardships ( famine, plague ), and saved the city more times before looting and arson by the Swedes ( prayer service ).

Of his many writings and seals song especially the world famous and popular hymn was now all thank God alive. The text first appeared in the appendix to his book Jesus' heart, which was published in 1636 in Leipzig, while the melody for the first time in 1647 in Johann Crügers hymnal practice pietatis melica appeared. Sustainable fame was the song as a hymn of Marktleuthen after the evening of the battle of Marktleuthen the surviving Prussian soldiers Rinck Arts sang song. In the 19th century Catherine Winkworth wrote the English translation Now thank we all our God.

From Rinck Arts seven planned " Luther dramas " have appeared and handed down only three in the print: 1 Eißlebische Christian Ritter ( 1613 ) ( used for the first time in German literature, the well-known parable of the rings ); 2 Indulgentiarius ... Eisslebische Mansfeld cheering Comoedia of the ... shame Johann Tetzel (1618 ); 3 Monetarius ... The Müntzerische Bawren War ( 1625).

Rinck Arts grave is in its long-standing workplace, the Eilenburger Nikolai Church.
