Martin Vahl

Martin Vahl ( born October 10, 1749 Bergen, † December 24, 1804 in Copenhagen ) was a Norwegian- Danish botanist and pupil of Linnaeus. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Vahl ".

Life and work

Vahl studied from 1766 to 1774 in Bergen, Copenhagen and Uppsala medicine and botany. Where he met the naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) know. From 1779 to 1782 he lectured at the Botanical Garden of Copenhagen. 1786, he became a professor at the Society for Natural History in Copenhagen. He was a member of the panel work Flora Danica. Between 1801 and 1804 he held the Chair of Botany at the University of Copenhagen.

The plant genus Vahlia Thunb. (temporarily of the genus Bistella slammed ) from the family Vahliaceae in the subclass of the aster -like ( unranked ) has been named after him.
