Martin van Cleve

Martin van Cleve ( Antwerp * 1520, † 1570) was a Dutch painter. He is the son of the painter William the younger and life was closely associated with his brother Henry, who had a great influence on his artistic career.

Martin studied under Frans Floris and discovered his passion for landscape painting. His brother Henry later convinced Martin to deal with the figurative painting. Here are historical issues to his favorites, but he devoted himself equally successful genre painting. After initial attempts at large, based on Italian models, compositions, he painted only small images.

In 1551, Martin van Cleve member of the Antwerp Academy and Guild of St. Luke. He never traveled outside his native Flanders and died at the age of fifty years of gout. Martin had four sons, who were all painters.
