Martinez is a city in Contra Costa County in the U.S. state of California, United States, with 36,700 inhabitants ( 2004) and the county seat of administration. The metropolitan area has a size of 34.8 km ².

The city was founded in 1849 and is the county seat of Management since 1850.

The writer John Muir lived here from 1890 until his death on December 24, 1914, his house is shown as John Muir National Historic Site since 1964. 1915 built the " oil company Shell" one of its first oil refineries on the outskirts of Martinez.
