Martinique Amazon

Martinique (Amazona martinica )

The Martinique Amazon (Amazona martinica ) is an extinct Amazonenpagagei of Martinique, an island in the Lesser Antilles.

This parrot was first mentioned in 1742 by Jean -Baptiste Labat with the words: " This parrot is me too ordinary a bird, as I want to stop me trying to describe him. " 1779 type of Georges- Louis Leclerc de Buffon was again described. Since no bones and other preserved material is available, Austin Hobart Clark wrote in 1905 the first scientific description based on the descriptions of Labat and Buffon. Lionel Walter Rothschild ordered this Amazone 1907 in his book Extinct Birds of the hypothetical species.

The Martinique Amazon should have seen the also extinct violets (Amazona violacea ) from the island of Guadeloupe very similar. Some scientists, such as the American ornithologist James Cowan Greenway suggests that both species were conspecific. Head, neck and bottom of Martinique Amazone were gray, the back was green.

Until 1800, the amazon Martinique became extinct, probably due to habitat destruction and over-hunting.
