Martti Miettunen

Martti Juhani Miettunen ( born April 17, 1907 in Simo, Lapland; † 19 January 2002 Kauniainen ) was a Finnish politician and twice Prime Minister.

Political career

MP, Minister and Governor

Miettunen holds a degree in Agricultural Science and began his political career in 1945 with the election of deputies of the Reichstag. There he represented the interests of the country until 1958 Federal. In the following decades he was also repeatedly Agriculture Minister in the Cabinets of Urho Kekkonen ( 1951-1953 ), Karl- August Fagerholm ( 1956-1957 and 1958-1959 ) and Mauno Koivisto ( 1968 to 1970 ). In the cabinet of Fagerholm, he was also Minister of Finance from 1956 to 1957.

Miettunen was dated 14 November 1958 to 1973 governor of the province of Lapland.

Prime Minister 1961-1962 and 1975-1977

On 14 July 1961 Miettunen became prime minister for the first time. As such, he headed until April 13, 1962, a cabinet belonging to the only Minister of the Land League.

On November 30, 1975, he was the second time Prime Minister of a coalition government, the minister of his 1965 on the Centre Party ( Kesk ) renamed Land League and the Social Democratic Party (SDP ), the Democratic Union of the Finnish people ( SKDL ), the Swedish People's Party ( SFP - RKP ) and the Liberal people's Party ( LKP ) belonged. However Miettunen offered because of disagreements with the chairman of the Communist SKDL Aarne Saarinen, which ultimately joined the SDP, in September 1976 President Kekkonen his resignation. However, this commissioned him to form a minority government composed of ministers of KESK, SFP, and LKP. On May 15, 1977 Miettunen occurred but finally as prime minister and was succeeded in this office by Kalevi Sorsa.
