Marty Willson-Piper

Martin Howard Willson - Piper ( born May 7, 1958 in Manchester, England ) is a British songwriter, musician and poet. He is the guitarist of the Australian psychedelic rock band The Church. Willson - Piper grew up in Liverpool, where he played in various bands before he went to Australia in the early 1980s, initially as a street musician was traveling. In 1980 he was invited by Steve Kilbey and Peter Koppes to be a member of The Church.

Willson - Piper's sonic trademark was initially especially the bell-like, psychedelic sound of his twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar. However, over the years, he developed a distinctive style, which also receives influences from Krautrock, space rock and ambient. A clear dividing line between rhythm and solo work can hardly pull at Willson - Piper game. Both elements are characterized by unconventional voicings, arpeggios, and especially the use of a volume pedal, with which he can single notes and chords without any attack and hide. Among his favorite effects include above all the solo game of whammy bar and a carefully inserted wah-wah.

In addition to his work with The Church he released solo albums and has participated in numerous collaborations with. His solo albums are more oriented to the classic songwriting, but also by falling on very different musical experiments.

In addition, he appears regularly with numerous other artists: for many years he was the guitarist of All About Eve. He worked with Jules Shear, Aimee Mann, Linda Perry, Brix Smith and Tom Verlaine. Since 2004 he plays in the Australian punk veterans The Saints. 2005 he appeared on the debut solo album by former Catherine Wheel lead singer Rob Dickinson Fresh Wine For The Horses.

Willson - Piper lives primarily in New York but is always traveling. He currently holds in Australia to tour with The Church, but plans to settle in England. Cardinal solo project is currently Noctorum, along with producer and musician Dare Mason.
