Martyn Williams

Martyn Elwyn Williams, MBE ( born September 1, 1975 in Pontypridd ) is a Welsh rugby union player who is used to the position of winger. He plays for the Cardiff Blues and is part of the Welsh national team.

Career

Williams began his career at Pontypridd RFC, with which he was able to secure the 1997 Welsh Championship title itself. In 1999 he moved to Cardiff, where he plays to this day. Between 2002 and 2005 he was captain of the RFC and the Blues until Rhys Williams replaced him.

The first international match played Williams in 1996 against the Barbarians, where he had played for the reserve of the national team in the same year already. His next game followed with the Five Nations in 1998 against England. In 2003 he was the captain of the national team, as they met on Scotland for the first time.

In the first game of the 2005 Six Nations against England, Williams played his 50th game and played an important role for the team that won the Grand Slam at the end of the tournament. So he contributed two tries against France, as the Welsh already mentioned on the losing side. Because of his achievements, he was voted player of the tournament.

On 1 October 2007 Williams in the first round of the World Cup was followed by a disappointing departure of Welsh its preliminary End of career known. He returned in January 2008, surprisingly in the National team squad back and was part of the Welsh team that under new coach Warren Gatland after 2005 could again win the Grand Slam. He was chosen by the BBC in the team of the tournament.

With the Blues Williams succeeded in 2009 winning the EDF Energy Cup. He was elected in the final against Gloucester for Man of the Match. On April 21 of that year he was nominated by Ian McGeechan for the tour of the British and Irish Lions to South Africa, his third Lions tour.
