Mary Collyer

Mary Collyer, born Mitchell ( * ca 1716/1717 in London, † December 1762 ), was an English writer and translator from German and French.

Little is known about her life. She was probably born in London and was married to the writer and translator Joseph Collyer the elder, with whom she had eight children. Among her children was the engraver Joseph Collyer the Younger.

  • The Virtuous Orphan ( 1743), translation of La vie de Marianne of Marivaux
  • Memoirs of the Countess de Bressol ... from the French ( 2 volumes, 1743)
  • Felicia to Charlotte: being letters from a young lady in the country, to her friend in town. Containing a series of most interesting events, interspersed with moral reflections; chiefly tending to prove, did the Seeds of Virtue are implanted in the Mind of Every Reasonable Being. (1744-1749, in 2 volumes ). Collection of short stories by the author
  • The Christmas Box (1748/1749)
  • Death of Abel (1761 ), translation of Salomon Gessner's Death of Abel ( 1758)
  • The Messiah ( 2 vols, 1763), translation by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's Messiah. Completed and published after her death by her husband.
