Mary Jane Leach

Mary Jane Leach (* 1949 in Vermont) is an American composer.

Leach sang in her childhood in the church choir and played in her high school days bass clarinet. In the late 1970s, she came to New York, where she joined the avant-garde music scene and studied at Columbia University music. After minimalist works she turned in the 1980s, especially the vocal music. She is best known as a composer of new music with works such as Celestial Fires (1993) and Ariadne 's Lament (1998).

She has received commissions from ensembles such as the Fondazione ICO Tito Schipa, the group Relâche, the The Downtown Ensemble, the Newband and the New York Treble Singers and soloists such as Emanuele Arciulli, Sarah Cahill, Guy Klucevsek, Shannon Peet and Libby Van Cleve. In 1995 she received an award founded by Jasper Johns and John Cage Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts. Leach's works were, inter alia, Emanuele Arciulli and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Lecce, György Lakatos and the Trio Lignum, the Flemish Radio Choir, the Ensemble La Gioia, the London Concord Singers and the Swiss choir Vox Feminae listed.
