Mary Kelly (artist)

Mary Kelly ( born June 7, 1941 in Fort Dodge, IA ) is an American conceptual artist, who mainly dealing in her work with feminist issues.

Life

Kelly studied art and music at the College of Saint Teresa, a Catholic women's college in Winona, MN, and graduated there in 1963 with a BA from. Then they went to Europe and studied art and art history at the Institute Pius XII. in Florence, where she 1965 M. A. obtained. In 1970 she was awarded after further studies a postgraduate degree in painting at the St. Martin's School of Art in London.

Starting in 1968, Kelly worked in London as an artist, teacher, curator and publicist. Her first solo exhibition was in 1976 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London - Kelly showed three of the six documents from its multi-year project Post-Partum Document. The work visualizes and analyzes the mother -child relationship between Kelly and her son, said Kelly drawings, diagrams and Found Objects began. The work achieved at that time outside the art world a certain notoriety from the publicity around the use of non- regarded as worthy of art materials such as used diapers resulted. Post-Partum Document was first published in book form in 1983, and was first issued in fully Yale Center for British Art 1984. In 1989, Kelly from London to New York.
